There's a new set of rules that will change the way landlords and tenants go about paying for repairs.
Supporters were rallying in front of the Madison city council chambers on Tuesday night in support of an ordinance that would allow tenants to use their rent money to make repairs to their buildings when the landlord refuses to make the repairs.
If the landlord doesn't reimburse the tenant for the cost of those repairs, the tenant can withhold that money from the rent.
ACORN Head Organizer Ryan Spangler says, "It's a huge issue for low-income tenants. Not really for other folks, but like low-income tenants that are often ignored and neglected by landlords."
Spangler says other cities like Chicago and San Francisco already have an ordinance like this in place.
