Residents of the Allied Drive neighborhood are celebrating what they hope is a new beginning Sunday night.
Residents just wrapped up four intensive days of workshops and meetings with city leaders and architects. In that time, they have come up with three different plans for rebuilding and revitalizing the area.
Mayor Dave Cieslewicz says the final plan will likely be a hybrid of all three.
Earlier this year, the city bought a large portion of the rental housing in the neighborhood. Cieslewicz says the new plans correct design mistakes made when the neighborhood was first built decades ago.
"For example, turning the buildings on the street so there's eyes on the street," says Cieslewicz. "Porches for example, adding some more street connectivity instead of one large super block. We can actually use design to make the neighborhood safer."
The revitalization plans also include more homeownership, without increasing the cost of living.
Cieslewicz hopes to have a city-approved design plan in three to six months. From there, they'll begin hearing proposals from developers.
