If that first step into a student's home sweet home isn't all that sweet, tenant resources says the best thing you can do is pay attention.

It may seem like a long way off, now that you've just moved in, but keeping tabs on your new home is important to make sure you don't have a hefty bill come move-out time next year.

Tenant's Resources has some good tips for savvy renters...

Make sure to check the places you may not always look, that includes behind appliances, and in corners.

Take pictures of any damage that was there when you moved in, and include some proof that you didn't take the pictures a couple days before your move-out date.

And if you have any concerns, make sure you talk to your landlord first, before you try to sort things out legally.

"Most landlords know the law and are willing to comply with that, but there's always a handful that aren't going to comply with it though," said Megin McDonell of the Tenant Resource Center.
