Midvale Plaza Redevelopment Supported -- On Smaller Scale Save Email Print

Some Midvale Heights residents say a redevelopment plan is too tall and too dense. But the project brings with it a new 20,000 square foot library for the neighborhood.

Residents seem to agree with the idea of redevelopment, but some want to see it on a smaller scale.

Developer Joe Krupp wants to redevelop Midvale Plaza at the intersection of Midvale and Tokay Boulevards. Phase one of the project calls for a four-story, mixed-use building. It includes a mix of retail and 43 condominium homes with underground parking as well as the library.

Phase two involves retail space and apartments with underground parking, plus a surface parking lot. But some worry about congestion.

"It's getting a little old and worn out, and we would get a brand new double-sized Sequoya library. We're very excited about that and curious why the city isn't working harder to make sure that this comes to a successful conclusion here rather than have the entire project not supported by the neighborhood," resident Bonnie McMullin-Lawton says.

Developer Joe Krupp says he understands people's concerns but says his plan fits with the city's comprehensive plan. Meantime, Madison's alder for the Midvale Heights area, Cindy Thomas, says she's "torn."

She's also thrilled to have the library but worries about the density of the project.

The city council will consider the redevelopment at its meeting on July 18, and Krupp hopes to break ground in November.
