The Wisconsin Senate has voted to override Governor Jim Doyle's veto of Senate Bill 403. The measure would allow Wisconsin residents to obtain a permit to carry concealed weapons.
Senators voted 23-10 to override the veto. That meets the 2/3 requirement necessary to override. The measure will now move on to the Assembly. NBC 15 News contacted Speaker John Gard's office immediately following the Senate vote. A spokesperson for the speaker told us the assembly was in caucus as of the noon hour. No time as been scheduled yet for the Assembly to vote on the override issue.
Wisconsin is one of four states that does not have a concealed carry law. Nebraska, Kansas and Illinois are the other three states. Nebraska has a similar concealed carry bill moving through its legislature, which the governor has promised to sign.
Doyle has vetoed the measure twice. After vetoing it during a previous legislative session, an override attempt failed. A new version of the bill, calling for further regulations in the permit process was able to garner the necessary democratic votes to first pass the measure and insure an override in the Senate.
