Preparing Pets for Disaster Save Email Print

A | A | A

As we prepare for severe weather season, emergency responders want you to remember your pets.

Animal control agents and fire officials have some tips to remember should disaster strike your home.

Maintain current ID tags and information on your pet. Create a pet evacuation kit including food, water, a carrier, toys and a leash. And remember that animals can act out when they're scared.

"Any change in their routine will upset them. So what you can best do is prepare them even before the disaster."

You can do that by getting them used to long car trips, and teaching them a specific word, like "danger", that tells them to leave the house.
