They came to this little gas station in Monroe, for a number of reasons.
"Cheaper and I hear it gets more horsepower ... and it burns cleaner in your engines," said Matt Steffes, first-time E85 buyer.
During Monday's promotion, E85, was only 85 cents per gallon.
"It's normally about $50 to fill up the truck ... now it's $14.04," said Gigi Heffelfinger, another first-timer.
Drivers here were filling up with E85 ... a blend of gasoline for your car that uses 85 percent, corn–based ethanol ...
A product that its producers say burns cleaner and is more affordable than fossil fuels ... and, can help Wisconsin's farmers, since it uses corn grown in America's dairy land.
"Environmentally friendly, it's renewable ... and we're giving people jobs," said Gary Kramer, Badger State Ethanol.
Sounds like a savior, during a time when fossil fuel seems to be at the root of several world–wide issues.
But some environmentalists and state officials are saying ethanol is not the answer to our energy problems.
Officials in the Department of Natural Resources and Sierra Club say ethanol creates ozone ... and that would be a big problem for Wisconsin's air quality during the summer months.
"We're not against ethanol and biofuels," said Brett Hulsey, Sierra Club, "but ethanol, in particular, if not burned in the proper place, at the proper time, creates more pollution, not less pollution."
Ethanol producers say different studies say different things about ethanol's impact.
And that the corn–based fuel has already proven it is clean in states like California and New York.
"You can look at all the studies you want to, but at the end of the day, what really counts, is what happens in reality," said Kramer.
As for the price, Kramer says 85 cents a gallon was only a promotion and won't last ... but he did say their goal is keeping E85 at about 75percent the cost of regular unleaded ...
With prices at the pump right now, that would mean a gallon of E85 would cost about a $1.90.
